An Ode to John Mayer

Oh John, how I loathe thee.

Yes, I developed a schoolgirl crush on you after hearing "Your Body is a Wonderland." And I will admit, I admire the way you interact with your 3,048,033 Twitter followers. Your tweets are oftentimes entertaining -- a nice odd/insightful combination sometimes makes me giggle. But you know, you really put a nail in your coffin with your recent remarks in Playboy magazine. And you also know I am not the only one to think so.

For those in the dark, Mayer, in an apparent attempt to seem witty and raw, came off nothing short of stupid by saying way too much. Some choice excerpts included his notion of having a "hood pass," then dropping the n-word. He discussed his sex life with a certain ex-girlfriend (ok, it was Jessica Simpson), describing it as "sexual napalm." He also talked about Jennifer Aniston and her aversion to social media, saying his frequent tweeting created a rift in their relationship and that "I think she’s still hoping it goes back to 1998."

But can we take another moment for how he dropped the n-word?

It's a given these are only sections of the interview. Sure, Mayer also spoke of his deep love and respect for his father, but then come more candid details of his personal life. It goes without saying people find this interesting... but he truly seems to lack a filter, and that's what draws more people in. He bemoans being misunderstood, but then he chooses to divulge entirely too much information, hence the vicious cycle that is his life with the media.

Sharing intimate details with friends is one thing, but sharing them with a magazine that's read worldwide is a whole other arena. Mayer's a smart man, so even if this is not innate knowledge, he should have learned it over the years. It is for this reason, and the fact he used a word that should never have been uttered, that this self-professed douche bag will remain just that in my eyes. On February 10th he tweeted "They don't make rehab centers for being an asshole."

It's a damn shame they don't.

Giving Thanks

I am so grateful for the holidays because every year, without fail, they help me put it allll in perspective. Thanks to a huge emphasis on family, generosity and love, the petty worries and drama fall to the wayside while I revel in how much I really have to be thankful for. And it is a lot... I have my health, a roof over my head, food in my fridge, a job AND friends and family to lean on. So, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, below are just some of the reasons I am giving thanks this year.

First and foremost, I am employed. I have friends who are not as lucky, and it highlights how layoffs and cutbacks are not so unimaginable. I am blessed to have a job and like what I do.
Big city that it is, I constantly see others guiding the blind toward an entrance, helping the elderly cross the street and paying for the bus fares of others here in Chicago. The kindness of strangers puts a smile on my face.
Two of my very best friends got engaged this year, and their happiness means the world to me.
I joined a supper club that is forcing me outside of my frozen pizza bubble -- as in, I have to cook. Hey, if you don't try, you never know, right? Thank God my critics are also good friends... here's to them taking it easy on me.
I have seven great siblings who know they can come to me for anything. Though they like to worry me with their concocted stories ("I got a drinking ticket! Don't tell mom!"), I know that despite their teenage transgressions, they are all right.

And here at JB Chi, we would also like to thank the manyyyy people who have helped us promote our campaigns this year. The Tetra Pak campaign is something we are all especially proud of having a hand in, but we could have never done it alone.

To show our thanks, we will be sending #thankafarmer tweets tomorrow to show all the hardworking farmers how much we appreciate, well, their hard work. In the spirit of Thanksgiving, please take part in this between 10 a.m. and noon. Show 'em some appreciation, people... we all need it once in a while.

Campaign Wrap Up

All good things come to an end, and in this case, we have reached the end of the road with our Tetra Pak campaign. Those of you who are my Facebook friends will be sad to hear you will no longer receive my trick or treat requests, and on Twitter, you will cease to be "tricked" or "treated" as well. I want to thank all of you for participating in this -- and so does the WWF, because each time you played our apps, this nature conservation foundation received a donation.

We also want to extend a big thank you to the many writers who featured our campaign in their blogs. Their quality posts helped us spread the message to a much larger audience than we could have done alone, and in the process, we discovered some blogs we are sure to follow -- they're nothing short of inspirational! I Blame Drew's Cancer -- You Should Too

Every once in a while, you encounter something (or someone) that really makes an impression on you. In my case, it came from an unlikely source: Twitter. I stumbled upon Drew Olanoff, a cancer-fighter and blogger, and began reading his tweets. What followed is nothing short of inspiring.

Drew created a Twitter movement called #BlameDrewsCancer. He encouraged Twitterers to, via tweet, blame whatever was going wrong in their lives on his cancer. (Some examples: Faryl: @drew I #blamedrewscancer for Neil Patrick Harris not hosting the moon bombing. TimErnst: Wife's car had a nail in a tire this morning, $580 later, 4 new tires on Xterra. I #blamedrewscancer.) The goal? Drew hopes to have sponsors that will donate a dollar for every participant to Livestrong, his partner, when he beats his cancer.

But he didn't stop there. Drew is now in the midst of auctioning off his @drew username, and celebrities are getting in on the action. While he just hoped for a random Twitter user to step up and buy the moniker, the likes of Drew Carey have recently stepped into the ring -- in a big way. Carey has promised a one million dollar donation to the Livestrong Foundation if he reaches one million Twitter followers (at his @DrewFromTV) by midnight on December 31st. And with his current count at almost 69,000, it seems this might become a reality.

To think this all began as a result of a cancer diagnosis is nothing short of amazing. Instead of succumbing to bitterness and anger, Drew channeled his energy into something that will help others -- kindness to the max. If he can accomplish all this while going through chemo for Hodgkins Lymphoma, I think the least we can do is help him out by:

The Fruits of our Labor: SoNet Campaign

It's finally live! We've been working our butts off these past couple months at JB Chi to create something we think is nothing short of incredible: a complete “milk box” social networking campaign. It's a little bit of Facebook, a little bit of Twitter, a little bit of blogging, a little bit of e-mailing -- and a lot of blood, sweat and tears to bring you an online campaign that is not only fun, but also donates to the World Wildlife Fund with each click!

Here's the premise: Hershey’s and Organic Valley want to spread the word about milk in single serve, shelf stable cartons, and encourage moms to hand these out as Halloween treats this October. To do so, we created custom applications on Facebook, Twitter and the Web. On the social networking sites, you can choose whether your friends deserve to receive a treat or a trick – each and every one you send is a 10 cents donation to World Wildlife Fund. And on the Web, you can upload head shots of yourself and your friends, only to have them appear atop the dancing bodies of monsters, ready to trick or treat at your friends’ doors.

Each of these apps is fun and charitable. The dancing monsters, the quirky music and the Halloween humor make these lighthearted games worth sharing with your friends. Remember: While you’re laughing at the fact your friends decided you don't deserve "treats" (only tricks!), or horrified at the sight of your face on the body of a dancing vampire, you are also helping protect the future of nature with World Wildlife Fund. So share away!!!!

I Fell Off the Blogging Wagon

A dear friend pointed out today that if I was going to include my blog URL in my e-mail sig, I should probably keep it updated. And he's right -- it's been far too long. I could go into all the reasons, but I"ll spare you. Here's a quick summary of where my head has been for the past month:

1. I moved! I am now at a more convenient location in Lincoln Park, where I'm paying less and my commute is shorter (well, by a couple minutes anyway). And now I live with three dudes, so it goes without saying every day is an adventure. Nothing like mismatched furniture, IU memorabilia everywhere and the lack of a vacuum to greet you after a long day. When moving me in my dad joked he felt he was back at his college frat house. I think he hit it spot-on.

2. My workload at JB Chicago has gone through the roof. People are loving our social media ideas, and everyone wants a piece of it. I think we have truly found our stride, and a lot of it has to do with integrating Facebook, Twitter, blogs, etc. into campaigns. We have some really big things coming up -- so be expecting me to share them with you via social networking.

3. I joined a fitness boot camp. And it sucks. :) Twice a week for six weeks is all it takes to get ripped, right? I had session number one Tuesday (session two is tonight!), and let's just say I have my work cut out for me. Nothing like coming in last in the timed mile...and the timed wall sits...sigh.

And here are some things I am looking forward to:

1. The changes in the social media realm. With the emergence of Facebook Lite, the additions within the Facebook we all know and love (@ messages, anyone?), and the flux in Twitter users, I think the next couple of months will be telling when it comes to long term usage and trends.

2. Hank Baskett and Kendra's arrival in Indy. I am from Naptown and make a point to visit my family and friends about once a month. I can't wait to go to a Colts game and see him play. I'm not gonna lie -- I love Hank on their E! show, and I have to admit that Kendra is annoying, but endearing. Now, cue the Peyton/Kendra rumors...

3. Fall in Chicago. Though it does not compare to summer, sweatshirt weather is a close second. Almost time to break out the sweaters and boots... I'm hoping I find some great things I forgot I owned, which is almost like shopping without spending the money.

4. Crossing some more things off my "25 before 25" list. I have less than a year to get this in motion. On the top of my list: Signing up for a writing class, reading more classics and making a trip to NY.

One more thing I should add to my list is keeping this blog updated! Consider it done -- I am making it a priority to no longer deprive my fans. :) And if you notice anything in the marketing/advertising/social media world you think needs to be covered, keep letting me know.

Facebook for Brides

One of my best friends, recently bit the bullet; after eight (!) years of dating, Liz and her boyfriend Nick, also a friend of mine, are engaged. This comes as no surprise to anyone who knows them... nearly a decade of dating pretty much solidifies the fact she was gonna have a ring on her finger soon. While my biggest concern right now is what color my bridesmaid dress will be, I know Liz, planner that she is, already has the wedding wheels churning. (Who am I kidding -- they've been churning since she was five.) Though I will not be using this site's services for a (long) while, I think WeddingPreParty has what it takes to make her wedding planning a little easier and a lot more fun -- so Liz, this one goes out to you.

WeddingPreParty was recently launched as a branch of OneWed, a wedding planning Web site. WeddingPreParty operates as a social media site -- heavy on interactivity and light on formality. The wedding party and guests can use this as a hub to share information, post photos and help the couple plan their wedding. Each wedding has its own login info, keeping the wedding details private. Facebook users are able to log into the site using their account, and a little help from Facebook Connect. Whatever they do on the wedding site can then be published back on Facebook, which puts the info in front of more of their friends -- hence the viral nature of the site.

A recent Mashable article suggests some great ways wedding parties can use the site: "Those who are invited to the wedding pre-party website can add comments, propose a toast, add wedding tips (useful if you’ve been through it before), and provide stark and truthful info on weddings (on top of that, the bride and groom can ask for inspiration for new ideas)." The bride can assign duties and their deadlines, as well as see a basic checklist every bride could use. Finally, the couple can easily link to their cheesy but necessary “how we met" stories, pictures and gift registry.

WeddingPreParty is the first of its kind, and for those looking for a little organizational help while maintaining a fun feel, this could be a huge hit. I'm looking forward to Nick and Liz using this site... but not nearly as much as I am looking forward to the wedding!

My Experience with LASIK

A little over two weeks ago, I finally received my college graduation present: LASIK (thanks Mom and Dad!). After over 10 years of dealing with glasses, contacts and the problems that come with both, I have 20/20 vision without any help. I never thought the day would come, and though the surgery itself was somewhat daunting, I am now its biggest proponent.

I got glasses at a young age, and with every doctor visit came another bump up in my prescription. When glasses became "uncool" I graduated to contacts, and at first I was pretty responsible with them. However, as the years progressed I became lazy -- to the point where I was only taking my contacts out once a month, and only to put in a new pair. Due to this I was once gifted with a corneal abrasion as a result of calcium deposits on the lenses, as well as wayyy too many bouts with pink eye. One might assume this led me to actually start taking care of my eyes, but that's giving me too much credit. Sure, my eyes would get dry, but other than these isolated incidents, I thought I was ok... until I visited a new optometrist early this year.

Right after shaking my hand, she asked if I have a habit of sleeping in my contacts. She said that just by looking at me, she could tell because of the redness in my sclera (the white part of the eye) -- it's due to a lack of oxygen, and it's also irreversible. I finally got the jolt I needed, and it was a couple months before my LASIK appointment. Go figure.

Flash forward to the procedure itself. After asking an obscene amount of questions (Can I just do one eye today, in case I go blind? What's your real track record?), I was given some form of a sedative and sent into the freezing cold "OR." A nurse came over to hold down my shaking feet, and the magic began. The following is my recollection, which may or may not be complete due to memory-inhibiting fear.

First, Dr. Probst used some type of metal contraption to open my eye as wide as possible. I was then told to focus on a blinking red light. Focus I did -- and I was greeted with the pleasant smell of my burning eye. Immediately after this came the loss of vision for about three seconds. This could have been my undoing; even though the doctor, sensing my terror, told me everything was going perfectly... I honestly thought I was done for. Thankfully, I was wrong. The process was repeated on my other eye before Probst told me to sit up and tell him the time. All of this was done in a span of about eight minutes, and for the first time since I was 12, I was able to see the clock -- I was floored.

It was really that simple. Aside from some slight discomfort (I mean, it's not every day your eye is stretched to its limit and zapped with a laser), there was no pain at all. Afterward I slipped on some protective eye coverings and slept the day away. Over the next couple days my vision continued to improve. Sure, my eyes were sensitive to light and needed some extra TLC that only eye drops could provide, but upkeep was surprisingly minimal.

Today, my vision is 20/20. I went from being legally blind (about a -7 in contacts) to having perfect vision, and it is nothing short of awesome. No more losing contacts in the shower. No more peeling them from my eyeball at the end of the day (ok, the end of the month). And no more paying out the gates for rewetting drops, lenses, saline solution and glasses. Yes LASIK is expensive, but so is the alternative. If you are contemplating this procedure, I say go for it. It's easy, it's painless and it's over before you know it. Oh, and it's pretty much life-changing.

Doctors to Consult Google Before Resuscitating?!

As far as search engines today, Google = God. Yes, Bing is picking up speed, but we all know Google is the mainstay for the majority of people doing a search. Google can do it all: alert you via e-mail, streamline your online purchasing, search the full text of US patents... and now it's even reaching into health records. Google's latest initiative? Google Health, which allows you to organize your medical records online. (I know a line should go between these two paragraphs, but stupid blogger won't let me!)

Given the generally unorganized state of health records today, this is one addition to the Google family I know some healthcare employees will appreciate. Users can upload documents to their Google health profile, then grant access to their caregiver. This means if there was a time you were unable to give permission for something and your family was unreachable, your doctor or nurse can login and quickly get your advance directive (aka end of life wishes).

However, how comfortable would YOU be with giving Google access to such information? Google promises confidentiality, and it goes without saying submitting these documents online is not the only way someone could obtain your records, but is this simply one more way to risk the privacy of such documents? Your two cents would be appreciated... I'm still working on wrapping my head around this one.

MJ Died -- And Thanks to Burger King, So Did Subtlety

The awe-struck woman with an open mouth... the large, oblong sandwich situated directly in front of that open mouth... ohh, and lest we forget the ever so creative use of the word "blow"? Hmm, I wonder what Burger King is hinting at here?

In case you can't read the fine print, there is also use tasteful use of "Fill your desire for something long, juicy and grilled," "yourn for more" and "mind-blowing." Those ad execs must have scoured the pages of Cosmo in order to get this verbage... and no, that's not a compliment.

Yes, this ad will definitely get people talking... but will it make us (read: women) want to order up a "seven-incher"? Hell nawwww.

Burger King, with this ad you have been officially dethroned.

Can't Find a Date? There is Hope...

Ahh, the perils of dating. It seems everyone has a great story to share about that date that just shoulda never happened -- mine involved the guy renting Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle and passing out on the couch about 15 minutes in. And wouldn't wake up. On the first date. Needless to say, it was also the last. Oh, and he wasn't tired, per se; he smoked himself to sleep... if you get my drift. I was not impressed. :)

If you don't have the fortune to have a story such as this in your arsenal, have no fear; I get the feeling you could gain one reallllll quickkkk if you employ the services of any of these sites. I decided it was time to unearth an oldie but a goodie with I came across this gem (I was reading articles on Mashable -- NOT looking for an online dating site, mind you!): The Most Unusual and Unique Online Dating Sites.

Stuff like this cracks me up... and after checking out some of these sites, I expect you to be laughing, too.

Darwin Dating: When you think of Darwin, you think of survival of the fittest right? Well if you feel the godforsaken need to register with this site, you better be fit -- and by fit, I mean hot. With the mantra "Online Dating Minus Ugly People," this site has some strict rules that include:

-no out of proportion noses
-no out of date fashions
-no uncared for fingernails
-no ski jump noses
-no small jaws (men)

And how about that "Are you Beautiful? Click here" button? Yes you might be beautiful, but you sure as heck are vain, too. It's called confidence in moderation, people!

Women Behind Bars: Because locked-up women need some lovin' too, this site was created to match incarcerated women with, well, free men and women. The inmates don't have access to the internet, so interested parties must find the lady of their dreams via a photo and a shirt description, pay a nominal fee and are then mailed a postal address.

As the site says (punctuation errors included), "A great many of these girls are looking to becomes brides, turning from an inmate to a bride is a dream a number of them express in letters they send with their applications." Touting 38 marriages in the past three years (but who knows when the copy was last updated!), this site is not messing around. I just love the photo they selected to be featured on the home page.

AgeMatch: If you're a young girl looking for a sugar daddy, a young man searching for a cougar or any variation of those dating preferences, hit up AgeMatch.com. Apparently age ain't nothing but a number is not applicable here -- it's the most imporant differentiator when finding a mate! The site itself is hugely outdated and pretty sparse... which is only fitting, if you think about it. ;)

ScientificMatch: If all else fails, how about using science to find love? This site will analyze your DNA to match your with likeminded individuals. And if you choose to go this route, check out some of the benefits, according to the site:

-Chances are increased that you’ll love the natural body fragrance of your matches.
-You have a greater chance of a more satisfying sex life.
-Couples tend to have higher rates of fertility.
-All other things being equal, couples have a greater chance of having healthier children with more robust immune systems.

Because that's what it's all about, right?

Get In or Get Lost: New(ish) SoNet Sites

I think it's pretty much a given these days that social networking is an integral part of most marketing strategies. We definitely have our strategy down as far as how to use Facebook, Twitter, viral Web, etc. to reach target audiences, but staying current can be overwhelming -- there are new sites popping up constantly. The following are some I think are worth checking out (aka I did the hard work for you), as they really can add to your company's online presence.

1. Involver. I really think this company is on to something. Many of the apps are free (but I hear that might only be temporary), and they are cool. You can bulk up your company's FB page by adding things such as coupons, a carousel-style photo gallery, Power Point presentations and polls. Obviously their premium services offer more, but jumping on these apps while they are still complimentary can really make your page stand out -- and show others you are up on the latest and greatest. Us Weekly, American Apparel, Time magazine and numerous others have already jumped onboard. I just wish you could add these to personal profiles...

2. Get Satisfaction. This site is a hub where both companies and customers can interact and get some action going. Customers voice their praises/concerns/complaints, while companies are given the opportunity to address them head-on and give a personalized approach to customer service. See what people really think about the services you provide -- then take the time to show you care.

3. BzzScapes. Another way to scope out what others are saying about your company is through this site. People congregate here simply to share info about their favorite brands. Whether it be through coupons, blog posts or simply comments, users know they can get updated info on the brands they love. Companies can harness the power of this site creating relationships with top influencers -- establishing the brand advocacy we all want.

Dell Hell -- This One's for The Ladies

Dell's Della Web site is one giant step backward for womankind. A recent article in Advertising Age outlined the campaign, which caters to women -- apparently it's meant to show the female sect just how easy and helpful netbooks can be. And how do they choose to illustrate that, you might ask? Apparently I visited the site too late... the cooking and shoe shopping references were taken down, evidenced by an Editor's note, telling of some text changes. What's left are some half-hearted tips on how to track your workouts and upload photos, as well as some fashionable sleeves -- because, you know, looks are number one when buying a computer and all. Basically, there is no genuine tech information to be found.

Making a site about how your computer can help you buy great shoes is not the real issue. Implying that women only (and only women, for that matter!) use their computers for that reason is. Yes, the rest of the rest of the site is stereotypically "female" site, decorated with flowers and soft colors while featuring a "you go girl" story about an artist whose design can grace the top of your laptop. That I can get over. It's the whole "Della" premise, which they present as if it should be floating on a cloud and surrounded by rainbows and butterflies, that I resent. Do a quick Google search, and you will see I am far from the only one.

25 before 25

I am totally stealing this idea from my friend Jackie's blog (check it out at http://highheelhijinx.blogspot.com/), but I have to say, her thinking is pretty much in line with mine these days.

I've been working in Chicago for nearly a year now, and realizing how quickly that year went by has left me feeling somewhat nostalgic. I'm not gonna lie: I miss my friends and family a lot. I've been thinking about all of my siblings' track meets and school programs for which I am absent, as well as graduation parties, family dinners, trips to Broad Ripple and coffee gab-sessions.

Those thoughts, coupled with the fact I have friends who are either engaged or well on their way, has been enough to make me realize that time really does fly -- so it's important to (as cheesy as it sounds) live life. That said, here is the official unveiling of my 25 before 25 list:

1. Read more classics

2. Branch out in terms of my musical selection (apparently there's more to life than Snow Patrol) and get to know some oldies

3. Cook a legit meal (meaning I actually make it, not just heat it up), then serve it at a dinner party

4. REALLY grasp the concepts and uses for RSS links, backlinking, SEO, etc.

5. Start writing thank you notes

6. Take a writing class

7. Become involved with Big Brothers, Big Sisters

8. Buy a gym membership

9. Learn more about car maintenance

18. Need to consult my AP Stylebook less -- because I will be doing more writing and will know from practice

19. Travel to NY and do some serious shopping

20. Have each of my siblings visit me at least once

21. Start really doing my research when it comes to politics

22. Buy a piece of furniture at Goodwill, fix it up and actually like it

23. Plan a weekend getaway with my girls -- then follow through by going

24. Buy a good camera (and then use it)

25. Go to church more -- and because I want to, not because I feel obligated

However, I've never been too good with living by lists, so we'll see how this goes... :)

Pizza Hut: Serving It Hot and Fresh

Within recent years, worldwide powerhouse Pizza Hut has come to the realization that in order to remain relevant and in demand, venturing outside of the box might just be a necessity. A Marketing News article, written by Elisabeth A. Sullivan and titled "A Cut Above," delved into how Pizza Hut was looking to change. In addition to adding pasta to the menu (Who can forget the TV spots showing first-time consumers who thought they were eating restaurant food?), they are embracing the digital world by reaching out to their customers online. Last year the company launched a Facebook app that enabled people to view the menu -- then place an order. Select new "fans" of the Pizza Hut page earned $50 for, well, being a fan. And the grand prize? A vacation for two to Italy, awarded to one lucky pizza (or pasta, or wings) lover.

But it does not end there. Yes, Facebook has over 200 million active users, but we all know a handful of people who won't join the FB ("It's just a fad!" "I would become addicted!" "I'm too old!"). In hopes of targeting those individuals (and more!), Pizza Hut created both a widget and an app for tech-savvy individuals looking to order some food -- quick. To reach a younger set, they partnered with video game companies willing to promote the brand in-game, and even came up with "The Hut," their hip new moniker.

It's too soon to say if these efforts are pulling through for the company, but if I had to guess, I would think things at least begin to level out. Keeping in mind more people are opting to eat in, and that Pizza Hut is not exactly known for its healthy fare, I still expect that these marketing efforts will pay off in the long run because they are coming to their customers and embracing change. The company is doing what it can to beat out the competition, and hey, if all else fails, they have my vote...that pasta is darn good.

Things have been crazy here this week, so I have not had much time to dedicate to my blog. Buttttt, my day is never complete without doing some stumbling, so check out some sites that just might pull you away from fmylife and textsfromlastnight.

1. FoundMagazine.com. Users submit random notes they found behind dumpsters, in classrooms and on busses. Some are funny, some are weird and some are just downright scary... like this one one, discovered on a sidewalk, that says "Stay away from me and I'll not follow through with my plan of psycho-ness."

2. The Willard Suitcase Exhibit Online. Yeah, it's kind of creepy... but I found it pretty interesting. When the Willard Psychiatric center closed, workers happened upon the suitcases left by past residents. A portable exhibit (as well as a book) was created to display both the contents of the suitcases and the personal stories of the people to which they belonged. It gives a personal touch to people deemed "crazy" and creates awareness about mental illness.

3. Olan Mills Finest. And finally, for a good laugh, check out this compilation of pictures taken by Olan Mills Photography. A hodgepodge of awkward, cheesy and somewhat uncomfortable snapshots, it will make you feel better about your freshman year photo.

SunChips' Simple, Sexy Solar Signage

I have to admit I have not always been the most environmentally conscious person, but the influx of companies stepping up to the plate to take care of our earth are inspiring me to change. Last night I caught a Ziploc commercial that touted their Evolve sandwich bags, which are made with sun power (and 25% less plastic). Then, I stumbled across this SunChips billboard, which I love:

At first glance it might not look like much, but if you look a little closer you will see this signage is created compliments of shadows -- the letters extend from the top of the billboard. Pretty genius; it's simple but ever-so creative... and all the more fitting, considering SunChips are made with the help of solar energy.

These companies are doing what they can to help the planet, and also putting some much-needed pressure on others to follow their lead. The fact they are taking the initiative to create change really does influence my perception of the company -- and makes me more inclined to buy their products. Sounds like a win-win for all, eh?

The JB Chicago Brush With Fame

Growing up in Indiana, the odds of seeing someone famous were slim to none. There was the time I thought I saw Reggie Miller at Marsh, and I was once at Champps when THE Payton Manning was as well, but let's be honest... those are (or in the case of Reggie, were) local athletes. It should come as no shock to anyone that Indy is not exactly the center of the celebrity world.

Well, you move to Chicago and look what happens...Today is officially the first day I met someone famous. Mind you, I use that term loosely: I got my pic taken with Vicki, reality star of The Real Housewives of the OC. Apparently she is doing some work for (or with, I'm not quite sure) some people in our building, so of course we HAD to harass her for a photo.

We crept next door to ask her for a pic, and after waiting about 20 minutes while she chatted on her phone, we finally introduced ourselves. To those that watch the show, I know you are wondering: She did not emit a single "Whoo hooo!!" She was clad in a conservative suit (shocking, considering her affinity for bling and bright colors) and was friendly without being overbearing. We refrained from asking her any questions (Did Gretchen really have a bf on the side while her fiancee was dying of cancer? Why do all your friends dress like 25-year-old strippers?) and simply told her we were fans of the show. My boss Steve, my coworker Megan and I all got in the pic, then we went on our merry way -- feeling pretty ridiculous for asking her for the picture in the first place, but certain it did not matter because we will never see her again.

So there it is; my brush with "fame." It's only uphill from here... :)

Snickers' Snacklish? Umm, I'll Stick to English, Thanks

In these tough economic times, Snickers is vying to win some new customers with their lighthearted "Snacklish" ads. Haven't seen 'em? Take a gander at this snaxi:

Kinda creative, right? They go downhill from here.

Chewniversity? Really?

Patrick Chewing... get it?

It's like they're trying to be creative -- with emphasis on the trying. The ads don't make me laugh; they make me cringe. Why? Because Snickers wants you to visit a "peanutarium." Oh, and and remember Master P? He's now "Master P-nut."

These miss the mark by a mile. I picture a bunch of older, out-of-touch execs brainstorming these phrases and thinking they are SOOO the next big thing... when I feel my eight-year-old sister could outwit them.

The only way this campaign can be saved: Employ the witticisms of customers. Though not as heavily as with the Skittles campaign, Snickers.com leans on social networking, namely Facebook. The Snickers page allows users to upload their own "Snacklish" phrase. My two cents: If they want this whole lingo thing to work, they better start combing that site for some decent phrases. Until then, I'm sticking to English.

Point Goes to... BMW

Advertising is about getting a message out, and it's even better when that message manages to entertain its audience. The best example I have seen in a long time? These billboards, positioned on the corner of Santa Monica Blvd. and Beverly Glen Blvd. in Southern California.

Audi started the war of words, posting the billboard that says "Your move, BMW" above a new A4. Rather than ignore the challenge, BMW opted to fire back with just one word: "Checkmate."

This, for the time being, ceases the fire. Point: BMW -- in a major way.

Life in the Citayyyy

I've decided it's time to move.

Though I have only been in my studio for about five months, the fact it takes an hour to get to work is a bit of a problem. Well, that coupled with the $15 taxi rides (that's $15 each way) on the weekends. Distance is proving to be a hardship... and so the search begins.

Truth be told, I really do not mind having my own place... and even though I do not live in the "in" area of the city, I think it has its own charm. There are some great hole in the wall restaurants right outside my door, the people are friendly and helpful, and my rent is affordable.
However, I want to live in an area that is a little more... fun. I am 23 and living in a big city for the first time; I want bars within walking distance (or at least closer than a 30 minute cab ride) and boutiques on my block. It's not asking too much -- and since I will be splitting the rent (as well as the utilities... yay!), it will be doable.

Yes, the move is gonna suck, especially considering the first time I did it feels like a couple weeks ago. Let's just say I'm glad my new roommate is a guy... because those couches are heavy! :)

Finger Lickin' Good (Advertising)

Time to resume this blogging business after a week-long vacation in South Carolina (where, thanks to cold/rainy weather and my pale Irish skin, I think I came back whiter than I was when I left)!

Apparently, while I was wrapped up in a blanket on the beach, the KFC Colonel was hard at work... filling in potholes.

KFC is striving to tweak its image by distinguishing its chicken as high in quality and freshness. In order to drive that point home (pun intended), the chicken company is re-freshening with streets with its "Re-freshened by KCF" campaign. The Colonel will be sent to five major cities, where he will use their advertising dollars to fill in potholes -- then stamp the KFC logo on top with non permanent street chalk.

This campaign is the first of its kind -- and I think it's great KFC is doing something good with its ad budget. Yes, it could get a little tacky if it really caught on and the streets started to resemble billboards. (And I cannot image the Olympic officials who determine the 2016 location coming to Chicago and being impressed by graffiti on the streets.) But hey, it's chalk -- and anyone who lives in Chicago knows you drive at your own risk, especially during this time of year, because potholes are everyyyywhere. If the city can't fill 'em in quickly enough and the Colonel is offering, by all means, indulge him.

Flip the Switch

This Saturday, we have an opportunity to take part in something historic: Earth Hour. The World Wildlife Fund is asking both businesses and individuals to turn off their power for 60 minutes. Deeming this the "world’s first global election, between Earth and global warming," the Foundation wants people worldwide to show their support for our planet by flipping the switch.

Earth Hour began two years ago in Sydney, with 2.2 million homes and businesses participating. This year the goal is one billion participants, so on 3/28 at 8:30 p.m. local time, do your part (and encourage other to do the same). We only get one planet.

Svedka Sucks

There's another ad campaign currently plastered all over the bus stops and billboard of Chicago that I am not lovin': that for Svedka vodka. Case en point numero uno:

OK, OK... I get it... sex sells. If this were a woman (and not a fembot composed of simply, well, big boobs and long legs), this ad would be a blatant but boring example of that school of thought. But since it IS a fembot, does that change? In my (ever-so-humble) opinion, no. It is simply a hot girl (er, you know) hawking a product -- if you're gonna come from that 100% unoriginal angle, at least use some subtlety!

Per their advertising, Svedka is trying to take the lead as the "vodka of 2033" -- but really, what does that even mean? If so, the future is looking bleak, considering it will hold subservient trophy wives made of titanium. True, you can argue this campaign worked since it has me talking... but trust me when I say I will not be buying Svedka any time soon.

Call me crazy, but what about getting people talking about how innovate/creative/fun their ads are (see Pepsi blog post)? Trust me, I have a sense of humor and can appreciate vulgarity, but I think these ads completely miss the mark. I mean, at least make them funny, over the top or meaningful. As is, they are simply lame.

Resist Me, I'm Temptation

I have basically been unable to speak in fully-formed sentences this week. Why, you might ask? It's because of this website I have been promoting: tweetmeimirish.com.

Created as a promo for Axe, the site asks users to fill in these blanks: "_____ me, I'm _____" (a timely play off of "Kiss me, I'm Irish"). Well, in an effort to get the message out, I have been sending tweets to the people with the most followers on Twitter, hoping to direct them back to the site. This meant sending "Snuggle me, I'm a bunny!" to @SenJohnMcCain, "Catch me, I'm flak!" to @modzillafirefox and "Steal me, I'm a song!" to @Coldplay (ouch). The idea was great, and sending those tweets out was fun... but I beginning to notice how much it is affecting my life.

Last night while play cards, I said "End me, I'm this game" -- without thinking twice. My friends too haven been bitten by the blank-me bug; I have been getting text messages at random times, saying just "Pull me, I'm a finger!" and "Stretch me, I'm the truth!" (And trust me, that's about where the printable options end.) They in turn are asking other people, and I am no longer the only one mulling over this on the commute into work... it's spiraling out of control.

St. Paddy's Day is almost here, so that means my work on this site is coming to an end -- and my thoughts can return to things other than who should receive "Throw me, I'm a bone!" Until then, check out the site. The winner right now? "Cry for me, I'm Argentina!" However, "Fraggle me, I'm a rock" is a close second... put your skills to use and see if you can knock out the reigning champs.

Stella Artois: Just What is the Price of Perfection?

It pains me to write anything less than favorable about one of my favorite beers, but here it comes… I neither like nor get the Stella Artois ads. Featuring a glass of this Belgian beer with the phrase “Perfection has its price,” these billboards are currently all over Chicago. Am I the only one to find this slogan choice odd?

Some might view the ads as simply saying you too can achieve perfection, if you just buy some Stella. But my mind doesn’t go there; I think it’s almost like the product is being marketed as expensive -- something that does not appeal to the masses, especially now. And to back up this claim, the company’s tagline in the U.K. is “Reassuringly expensive." So apparently, Stella is brewed for the richer folk… but is this type of advertising really the way to go?

It seems to me these ads totally miss the mark. Truth be told, I am not a member of the wealthy set, so maybe the beer bigwigs could care less about my distain. But do these ads appeal to anyone? I think they are distasteful… which is a shame, considering the beer is far from that.

Celebs Who Tweet

Wanna know what Ashton Kutcher was up to yesterday? Before I give you a chance to answer that potentially loaded question, I’m just gonna tell you: He stopped in on his wife’s (Demi Moore, for those who aren’t in the know) photo shoot and was considering eating crepes but told himself he needed to work out instead. Is this too much information coming from Perez Hilton or US Weekly? Nope… he told me himself.

How, you might ask? Sadly, I must disclose that I do not have any type of celebrity connection; the closest I have is a friend related to Sarah Fisher and an aunt who is a dead ringer for Sheryl Crow. Truth be told, Ashton told me (along with 228,475 of his followers) on Twitter. Under the user name @aplusk, he tweets up a storm about a wide range of topics: His hopes legislation protecting exploited children will pass, books he recommends and what the weather is like in L.A. Celeb that he is, Kutcher also pumps out tweets relating to his famous friends. Recently he has posted a video featuring stylist Rachel Zoe, included links to pics of his wife and talked about meeting Jack (Nicholson?) at the Oscars.

For those who don’t know, this is one of the fastest-growing social networking sites on the Web. Users have 140 characters to answer one question: What are you doing? And answer they do – Kutcher is not the only celeb to take advantage of this microblogging site. Many more have jumped on the bandwagon, realizing this is free publicity that they can control. The ever-growing list of famous (famous being used loosely here) twitterers includes Tina Fey, MC Hammer, Britney Spears, Lance Armstrong, Barack Obama, Michael Phelps and Snoop Dogg – just to name a few. Granted, some of these accounts are maintained by someone other than the star (and when they are, it’s pretty obvious – tweets promote upcoming events and are not too exciting). But there are some – Kutcher’s, for example – that seem pretty legit.

Those who are up to date on social media realize the potential business drivers of Twitter. However, this site has other advantages: it can really humanize people, celebs included. In our celebrity-crazed society, fans can read what their favorite stars are really up to (provided the user really is who he claims to be!). Twitter provides a peek into the lives of people we want to know more about – famous or not. People love to learn about other people, and Twitter can share snippets of people’s lives in real time… doesn’t get much better than that.

Skittles: Now Offering a Social Networking-Flavored Taste of the Rainbow

Yesterday, my boss told me to check out skittles.com, without telling me why. We have a pretty casual environment here @ JB, so I have to admit I assumed the link would take me to something that was a) related to off cuff humor b) barely appropriate for work or c) a mixture of the two. Ever the obedient employee, I keyed in the URL and was immediately… thrown off.

Up pops a box, asking you to enter your age. There is also a disclaimer, saying anything written on pages beyond the skittles site is not under the company’s control. Once you enter your birthday, you are taken to… a Twitter page, full of tweets about the product. A small box with “friends” (it takes you to the Skittles Facebook page) and “media” tabs (links to You Tube and Flickr Skittles pages) remains in the upper left hand corner, hovering over the site you are viewing.

This approach got marketing blogs buzzing yesterday. Urlesque referred to the inventors as “genius,” while most others, such as Wisdump, highlighted the pros and the cons of this viral campaign. Overall consensus? This is a risky move; however, people are talking (and tweeting) – so in this respect, it is a success.

My thoughts on the Skittles social media attack initially lean more toward the “uh, this is risky” side, mainly because when the Twitter page is pulled up, many of the comments are not exactly conducive to the products Skittles sell. (Needless to say, people have heard about the campaign and are one-upping either other on the offensive scale.) True, once the next big thing comes along, all of this hoopla will die down and the tweets can go back to being all about the candy – but will that really happen? How many tweets can there really be about Skittles products, without this campaign behind them?

However, I have to hand it to them: Skittles & Co. took the risk and let people talk about their product without trying to control those comments. They also embraced the social media tools instead of running away from them. How this ends I do not know, but for the time being, people are talking. I think it’s pretty cool Skittles is willing to experiment, and I can’t wait to see how this one turns out.

Friday's Top Four List

So I said from the beginning this blog would not just be about marketing – gotta throw some additional info in here to add some personality and spice! Continuing with the Friday trend of making lists of things I am currently diggin’, here is a hodgepodge of websites, restaurants and stores this marketing newbie likes:

1. Gofugyourself.com. This site stands out thanks to two really good writers. They combine satire with fashion by making fun of some unfortunate (celebrity) wardrobe choices. You will swear they took the thoughts right out of your head (but made them much more eloquent before writing them!).
2. Fark.com. It pulls offbeat stories from some of the major newswires, then tags them for you with words like “amusing,” “asinine” and “weird.” After you get your top headlines for the day, reading a couple of stories from FARK will, well, do nothing to reaffirm your belief in humanity – but it WILL make you laugh.
3. A Taste of Lebanon. Some friends and I found this restaurant a couple weeks ago, and thanks to its great food and even greater prices (er, as in it’s cheap), I have been back an embarrassing amount of times for their chicken shawarma wrap and hummus. Though it is a complete hole in the wall (not diggin’ their Christmas tree-ish border, or the sink smack-dab in the middle of the establishment), low and behold, it has been voted one of Chicago’s best restaurants in the past. It’s good, cheap AND I don’t have to cook? No-brainer.
4. Hopleaf. I LOVE this restaurant/bar. Their raspberry beer (they have a range of beers you have never heard of but will soon love) keeps me coming back, and their food is quite delish. Reservations are a must, but that does not mean you will be seated right away… If you come, be prepared to wait a while. But while you are waiting, by all means, have a raspberry beer.

Lovin' the Companies That are Doing Some Good...

There is one trend in marketing that I am really happy about, and it has nothing to do with flashy designs or outrageous antics. Instead, this is a trend about doing some good within our worldwide community. Sure, the companies that partake in such programs receive good PR out of the deal, but I choose to believe they are also doing this out of the goodness of their hearts by noticing an area they can help improve and taking steps to make a change.

One outreach worth noting is The Starbucks Foundation. Whether you dig their coffee or not, there is no denying Starbucks is using its fame and fortune to help others. The foundation was actually started 12 years ago, with a focus on funding literacy programs. Since then the foundation's efforts have expanded into supporting young social entrepreneurs in the world, donating a sizable portion of Ethos water sales to clean water programs, aiding those in need in China through the China Education Project, and funding repair in areas ravaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Additionally, ice cream giants Haagen-Dazs launched a campaign to "Help the Honeybees" early last year. Noting honeybee pollination is necessary for much of the food we eat (yes, including ice cream) -- and that bee colonies are on the decline in the US -- the company created a money-raising new flavor (Vanilla Honey Bee), as well as donating $250,000 toward research.

And a more recent example lies in a Houston, Texas, summit that took place this month. The National Dairy Council, in conjunction with the Houston Independent School District and many, many others, decided the need to address childhood obesity is now. The summit was a two-day brainstorming session that included everyone from community leaders to students. The goal? To create feasible plans that offer solutions to the epidemic that is childhood obesity. Everyone donated their time and efforts in the hopes obesity rates in Texas could begin to lower, instead of continuing to rise.

Companies like these are leading the way and setting a great example of how we really can make a difference. It's not all about profits and stocks -- creating a presence in the community can make a world of difference both for others and the organization itself. And in all honesty, when I know a company is donating a portion of its proceeds or is working with its community, I am more inclined to buy its product or spread the word -- making this a win-win for all involved.

I was logged into my blog this morning, and our VP/COO caught a glimpse of it. "Marketing Newbie?" he said. "You're not a newbie anymore, are you?" I laughed and said yes, I was definitely still new to the game. He said that maybe in a couple more weeks, I could change the name of my blog to "Marketing Veteran." That got me thinking: when will that shift (in real life, not within my blog, of course) actually occur?

I've been a marketing assistant here at JB Chicago for over seven months now. After graduating from IU (go Hoosiers!) I plunged headfirst into the world of marketing, hearing terms like SWOT analysis, RFP and pay per click on a weekly basis. My background is in journalism, so this was somewhat of a culture shock. Granted, things became less abstract once I was exposed to their uses, but I remember writing down each unfamiliar phrase I heard uttered, then googling it at my first opportunity.

My role within the company has shifted a bit in the last month or so; I have moved away from many of the "typical" duties you might think a marketing assistant performs. Though I might be biased, I really think JB Chicago is on the forefront of understanding how companies can use social media resources effectively -- and I am now performing a lot of the research. This means knowing about RSS feeds, profile aggregators, SEO, backlinking... the list could go on and on. Overwhelming as it was (and can sometimes still be), these terms are once again become less abstract as I work with them and see their practical purposes.

So, because I am acquiring these new skill sets and learning the ins and outs of the beast that is social media, does this mean I am no longer a newbie? No -- I still have a lot to learn. I am, however, ok with that term... for now.

Love 'em or Hate 'em: The New Pepsi Ads

I have to confess: I love the new Pepsi ads. The bright, unexpected colors, the "pop-y" language, the young vibe... when I first saw the billboards, they made me smile. Maybe it's because the "YO," "XOXO" and "FO SHO" signage is, well, fun. And at the risk of sounding aloof, they (well, at least the ads that I saw initially) did not automatically remind me of the Obama campaign. I, however, seem to be in the minority... and I do now see where the majority is coming from. The only difference? I don't really care.

Google "Pepsi, Obama" and you will see the number of sites dedicated to "exposing" these similarities. And after looking at several, I can see the parallels. The "YES YOU CAN" and "COME TOGETHER" messaging does sound slightly Obama-esque, and if you really want to get literal, you can attest the newly-renovated Pepsi symbol itself does somewhat resemble that of "O" for Obama. There are people in the blogosphere arguing how if you "flip the sign, invert it, then rotate it 45 degrees, the two definitely look one in the same." (Not a literal translation, but you get my drift.) Obama is a hot topic, and hey, political analysts need something beside the downtrodden economy to discuss... maybe Pepsi was the next best choice?

The thing is, even if the two look somewhat similar, I don't see the problem. The ads made me smile because they are a change of pace, and are, for lack of a better term, pretty. Also, Pepsi has always taken the angle of being the drink of the new generation -- and believe it or not, messages of hope and community are not exclusive to Obama. Our country is going through some changes, and I think Pepsi is, at worst, riding on the coattails of the spirit of optimism...

but when did that become a bad thing?

A Quick Vent

I have been using public transportation for about two and a half months now. In Indy a car was my main method of getting around, and, directionally-challenged person that I am, the whole "red line," "brown line," "purple line" was hugely intimidating at first.
I'm not going to pretend like I have it down, but I can proudly report I know how to get to and from work a couple different ways. (If you are directionally-impaired, you will understand what a feat this is.) And since my commute is so long, I have lots of time to... sit there. In the hours I have spent observing, I have noticed some things that drive me absolutely crazy. Here goes...

1. If you are listening to an iPod, by all means, make sure it is turned down to a normal decibel. I STILL have Britney Spears' "Womanizer" in my head, thanks to someone on my bus this morning who was blaring it. Mind you, I was in the front of the bus, and she was in the back. She played it on repeat, which made me wonder: did something happen with a guy treating her badly recently? Did she get cheated on? What went down? Unless you want others hypothesizing about your personal life (and getting hugely irritated they are forced to listen to your new anthem), keep it down!

2. Yes, the bus/train is packed -- but try to retain some sense of personal space when it's doable. The girl who sat next to me on the bus today was all up in my grill. She elbowed me each time she turned the page of her Red Eye, and she repositioned every 8.5 seconds, also knocking into me in the process. You have your seat, and I have mine. Please stay there.

3. This should actually be number one: Give your seat up to the elderly. Yes, you might sometimes feel bad and think they will get offended if they are in that "not too old but old enough to make you question" range. My philosophy? Don't err on the side of caution and offer up your seat. It's simply common courtesy.

4. Finally, MOVE BACK! There's nothing worse than a morning when you are already running late, only to have a bus sail by because it's "too full." However, as it is zooming by, you notice the open gaps toward the rear. Next time you are onboard, remember those mornings... and scoot back to make room for those panicking they will have to sneak in after clock-in time.

OK, so maybe I'm ready for the weekend... upon reflection, this makes me sound like a cranky old woman. Most of the time my commute goes smoothly (minus the time a drunk guy fell on top of me -- that's a whole other story), and to be honest, not having to deal with parking, getting gas and all that can be nice. I know I cannot change the world (or make someee people learn manners!), but for what it's worth, that's my rant. :) TGIF.

Social Media: There's No Escaping It!

Today's topic: Social media.

Sure, most people already have a Facebook account, and eight out of 10 of them are probably using it to reunite with their first grade crush and their cousin's uncle's brother. You can also (creepily) view your ex's vacation photos, read 25 interesting facts about someone you took a class with four years ago, and even become privy to the fact someone you met once is posting statuses that offer wayyyy too much information (Jessica is "snotty and congested.").

But many business-minded people are realizing the huge capabilities these mediums (and not just Facebook -- we're talking Twitter, StumbleUpon and more) have in terms of getting their company's message out there. These forums have millions of users -- can we say free (and effective) billboards?

Here at JB Chicago, we think we are somewhat ahead of the curve when it comes to using social media to promote our vision. Though we don't have all the answers, we are working our derierres off to figure out the process (and iron out some of the kinks).

Hi, and thanks for checking out my blog.

I will be doing my best to entertain you with my trials and tribulations as a marketing newbie. I'll be commenting on my findings, thoughts and anything else I think you might want to read. And as a Chicago newbie who is directionally-challenged as well, I'll be sharing what life in the city is like for a 23-year-old young professional.
