An Ode to John Mayer

Oh John, how I loathe thee.

Yes, I developed a schoolgirl crush on you after hearing "Your Body is a Wonderland." And I will admit, I admire the way you interact with your 3,048,033 Twitter followers. Your tweets are oftentimes entertaining -- a nice odd/insightful combination sometimes makes me giggle. But you know, you really put a nail in your coffin with your recent remarks in Playboy magazine. And you also know I am not the only one to think so.

For those in the dark, Mayer, in an apparent attempt to seem witty and raw, came off nothing short of stupid by saying way too much. Some choice excerpts included his notion of having a "hood pass," then dropping the n-word. He discussed his sex life with a certain ex-girlfriend (ok, it was Jessica Simpson), describing it as "sexual napalm." He also talked about Jennifer Aniston and her aversion to social media, saying his frequent tweeting created a rift in their relationship and that "I think she’s still hoping it goes back to 1998."

But can we take another moment for how he dropped the n-word?

It's a given these are only sections of the interview. Sure, Mayer also spoke of his deep love and respect for his father, but then come more candid details of his personal life. It goes without saying people find this interesting... but he truly seems to lack a filter, and that's what draws more people in. He bemoans being misunderstood, but then he chooses to divulge entirely too much information, hence the vicious cycle that is his life with the media.

Sharing intimate details with friends is one thing, but sharing them with a magazine that's read worldwide is a whole other arena. Mayer's a smart man, so even if this is not innate knowledge, he should have learned it over the years. It is for this reason, and the fact he used a word that should never have been uttered, that this self-professed douche bag will remain just that in my eyes. On February 10th he tweeted "They don't make rehab centers for being an asshole."

It's a damn shame they don't.

  1. oh kimbo -

    1. He protected Jen in the article, and the "back to 1998" quote wasn't meant in any malicious manner. He said she was popular before TMZ and Twitter and blah blah. The 'razzis would be something to be watch for. He mentioned it was a complication in the relationship..

    2. He was given the hood pass. Didn't ask for it.

    3. People say he lacks a filter. Obviously he enjoys the challenge of proving people wrong - even states he is addicted to the challenge.

-tabloids will lack filters as well and major on every minor quote. out of context, etc.

those are usually about him and his personal life (women)

I think the perception of a lack of filter shines through in rebuttals to 'rumors.' -as well as open ended interviews that publications such as Playboy magazine. He has a filter - didn't want to say how many songs on Battle Studies is about Jen A.

His honesty is what people love to hate him for.

  3. I appreciate the feedback! His comments are making waves all over. I stick to my post... if I dated him and he spoke openly about our history, I would not be a happy camper. Some see it as honesty, but I see it as insensitivity. That said, to each his own!

  4. I am a big fan of Mayer's music, but not necessarily the man himself. In both this Playboy interview and his recent Rolling Stone interview, he tries to justify some of his actions by making them seem highly philosophical. For example, if you like to watch porn and masterbate, that's fine, but don't make it out to be more than it is.

That said, I think you took him through the wringer a bit more than he deserved. Yes, the comments that you chose do make him seem like a terrible person, but in context, he was saying something different. He never called anyone the n-word, and it seems like he was saying that he doesn't have the right to use the word. It seems like a lot of females hate this man for what happened between he and Jen, and that hate affects him everyday because women do not take him seriously. I know, I know, "Poor John", but still, that sucks to have to deal with.

This does remind me a little bit of our Chris Brown discussion a while back though. Sometimes if you like the music, you just try to forget about the person writing/singing it.

    Also, great picture lol

  5. Hi Brian -- thanks for your two cents! However, I respectfully disagree. Maybe he didn't call someone the n-word, but in my opinion, saying it is saying it, not matter the supposed reason.

And I don't "hate" him for what happened with Jen (in fact, I don't hate him at all -- it's not that deep). I simply don't respect his decision to talk about his sex life openly... I'm pretty sure Jessica didn't give him permission to share.

I think that because he opted to divulge, analyzation is fair game. If he kept it all about the music, I would be able to focus on the music. He, however, does quite the opposite. :)
